The pledge has gained significant national traction, with universities worldwide adopting the pledge to listen and believe. This initiative, started from the tragic murder of University of Utah student-athlete Lauren McCluskey, aims to improve the response to violence against students and create a safer campus environment. 

Lauren’s story is a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of campus safety. Five years ago, Lauren reached out to campus police and the University’s Housing Office for help more than 20 times before she was murdered by an ex-boyfriend on campus. The death was a preventable tragedy, and emphasizes the need for better safety measures and support systems for students.

The Lauren McCluskey Foundation, dedicated to promoting campus safety, has been instrumental in advocating for Lauren’s Promise. The foundation’s mission is to honor Lauren’s legacy and improve the response to relationship violence and stalking on college campuses. The addition of the pledge to syllabi by numerous professors is a testament to the growing recognition of the need for campus safety. This initiative not only highlights the importance of protecting students but also encourages educational institutions to adopt comprehensive security measures.

The foundation continues to support various student safety programs, including self-defense classes, memorial walks, and educational workshops, encouraging students to seek help when needed.
