Major Heather Sturzenegger of the University of Utah Department of Public Safety recently represented Utah at the prestigious FBI National Academy, Session 296, an internationally recognized program that brings together a select group of law enforcement leaders.
At the Academy, Major Sturzenegger shared Lauren McCluskey’s story and Lauren’s Promise, “I will listen and believe you if someone is threatening you,” with a cohort of 254 law enforcement leaders, including 39 international representatives. Her presentation prompted officers from across the country and around the world to examine their own departmental policies and consider ways to improve the response to stalking and relationship violence. Many participants shared that Lauren’s story encouraged reflection and informed ongoing conversations about victim reporting and institutional response within their agencies.
In addition to her leadership within the University of Utah Department of Public Safety, Major Sturzenegger serves law enforcement professionals across Utah by teaching trauma informed sexual assault investigations for Utah POST, the Peace Officer Standards and Training program. Her work has improved institutional practices and supported survivor centered response.
The FBI National Academy has already asked Major Sturzenegger to return in future sessions to continue sharing this critical message. We are deeply grateful for her dedication, advocacy, and commitment to sharing Lauren’s story and advancing the work of the Lauren McCluskey Foundation.
